Continuing efforts to reduce the environmental damage of plastics, the Legislative Commission of Environmental protection and climate change has approved an initiative that It will impose fines of up to 339 thousand 600 pesosto those who distribute single -use plastics, such as bags, straws and plastic cutlery.
This recent initiative adds to the actions that different world nations and organisms have implemented, as part of the global trends of combating the excessive use of single -use plastics.
Who can be fined?
The proposal, which has been reviewed both in the commissions of Environment and Commerce of the Mexican Congress, establishes economic sanctions to Companies, businesses and natural persons that continue the distribution of non -biodegradable plastics. In this sense, the fine could reach up to 339 thousand 600 pesos, depending on the scale that the infraction has.
Additionally, the initiative will not only sanction the distribution of plastics in shops, but also in others public and private spaces that do not comply with the new regulations.

Awareness programs
Economic sanctions is not the only thing that this initiative contemplates, since it also proposes the creation of awareness programs, aimed at promoting the use of biodegradable products and attached to trends in favor of the environment. The programs will focus on merchants, entrepreneurs and citizens, with the objective of sensitizing the irremediable effects that the use of non -reusable plastics has on the ecosystems of the world.
