The Gulf of Mexico no longer exists … at least on American cards. By a decree signed upon his return to the White House, Donald Trump ordered to rename this vast expanse of water “Gulf of America”. A controversial decision immediately adopted by Google and Apple on their mapping applications for users located in the United States.
“Gulf of America!” “Exclaimed the former and current president on his social social network, accompanied by an image of the new card and a link to his official proclamation. The White House also relayed this ad on X, confirming the adoption of the new name by Google Maps and Apple Plans.
Different denominations depending on the country
The Google mapping application now displays “Gulf of America” for users in the United States, while keeping “Gulf of Mexico” for those located in the rest of the world and indicating the two names for third countries, As is the use for the disputed territories. For its part, Apple Plans adopts a similar approach: the Gulf becomes “Gulf of America” on devices connected to the United States, but remains “Gulf of Mexico” elsewhere in the world.
This decision provoked strong reactions, notably in Mexico, where President Claudia Sheinbaum quipped by proposing to rename the United States in “Mexican America”, in reference to old 17th century cards.
An “indelible part of America”
Donald Trump justifies this change by affirming that this maritime region is “an indelible part of America”, essential to the economy of the United States, in particular in terms of oil production, fishing and tourism. He even proclaimed on February 9 as the “Gulf Day of America”.
This initiative arouses diplomatic concerns far beyond Mexico. The modification of such a symbolic geographic name could rekindle tensions in Latin America and within the international community. For the time being, neither Apple nor Google has officially commented on this controversy that is just beginning.
