The age limit regulation of children on digital platforms, social media experts: The government must be closely monitoring

To be known beforehand, the Minister of Communication and Information Meutya Hafid said the government was taking firm steps by forming a team to strengthen the regulation of child protection in the digital domain, one of which was preparing a regulation on the content of content moderation (saman).

“We want to ensure a healthy and productive digital space for all, especially the younger generation. Therefore, the government has prepared a number of regulations, including Saman and immediately PP Digital Child Protection,” said the Minister 2/2025).

He asserted that the regulation of digital platforms, including the age limit rules for children playing social media (social media), which is being prepared by the government is not aimed at limiting freedom of expression.

However, this regulation is needed to create a balance between freedom and protection of citizens’ rights.

“Other countries already have strict regulations on digital platforms, and Indonesia will not be left behind,” said Meutya Hafid.

“We want to ensure that all parties, including the global platform, comply with the applicable regulations in Indonesia,” he added.

One of the main focus of this regulation is the protection of children in the digital world. The government is currently discussing with academics and experts to determine the right age limits for children in accessing digital platforms.

“We want this rule to truly have a positive impact. Therefore, we hold experts who understand the growth and development of children so that this policy is right on target,” he said.

The government also continues to establish communication with digital platforms to ensure this regulation can be implemented properly. In the next one to two months, the government will discuss intensively with a number of digital platforms.
