
They would like to return to their country, without losing the possibility of leaving or losing what they have built elsewhere, sometimes for several years: not to let go of the prey for the shadow. On January 15, a group of fourteen Syrian refugees, including a teacher, a computer scientist, a journalist, a lawyer or even a housewife, sent an open letter to the President of the Republic. They ask the guarantee of being able to go to Syria “Without risk of revocation” protection from which they benefit from in France. Their campaign, entitled “Freedom to act, right to return”, backed by an online petition, follows the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8, 2024.
In principle, a refugee is not supposed to return to his country, at the risk of being withdrawn. The Geneva Convention on Refugees provides, in fact, that a protection ceases if a person “Voluntarily asked for the protection of the country of which it has nationality”. The French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Monde Have thus decided, in 2024, of around 150 cessations on this reason of allegiance to the authorities, “At the end of contradictory procedures”especially towards Russian and Turkish nationals. However, there is no automation in this area, and, with the current political change in Damascus, exile Syrians maintain the possibility of “Contribute to reconstruction (of) pays (…) et to the long -awaited democratic transition ”.
