Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The Beatles again recorded history by winning their 8th Grammy, through the song Now and Then. Interestingly, the victory in the Best Rock Performance category was achieved thanks to the help of AI or artificial intelligence.
Quoted from The VergeWednesday (5/2/2025), now and then began with a demonstration made by one of The Beatles retainer John Lennon in the late 1970s. P
There were mid-1990s, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison tried to finish the song.
The plan, the song was completed for the Beatles Anthology project. However, the limitations of technology at that time made it difficult for them to separate the vocals and piano Lennon from the original Lo-Fi demo.
Only then in 2021, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr managed to complete this song thanks to the help of Peter Jackson and the audio team.
They developed machine learning which is able to isolate and clarify John Lennon’s recording elements, without changing or creating new sounds.
This technology is actually different from the popular generative AI today, especially the ability to imitate the sound or style of an artist. Because, the sound that was played in this song was truly John Lennon’s voice.
This was also confirmed by Paul McCartney who said no elements were created synthetically in this song.
“To clarify, nothing is made artificially or synthetically. Everything is real and we all play in this song,” McCartney said in 2023.
He stated, they only cleaned the existing recordings, a process that had actually been carried out for years.
The Beatles victory at the 2025 Grammy Awards marked the first time a song made by AI’s assistance won this prestigious award.
The song beats other musicians in the same category as Pearl Jam, Green Day, The Black Keys, Idles, and St. Vincent.
