Although an anti -American feeling reigns within the population of Mexico, the boycott movement of American products is much less fervent than that in Canada, according to a former Mexican diplomat.

In an interview with LCN, the former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Andrés Rozental, explains that the Mexicans have lived in the last days with the same uncertainty as Canadians.
The consequences would have been similar to those scheduled in Canada, according to him, if the 25% customs prices had come into force on Tuesday.
“Between 80 and 85% of our exports go to the United States,” he says. It’s about the same figure as for Canada. If we had to survive at prices of 25% (…), it would surely have led to a recession (…) perhaps even to a depression. “
However, the “anti-American” movement is less fervent, especially because Mexicans consume fewer American products.
“I believe that (it is) less (important) than in Canada,” he says. For example, what happened during a hockey match when the public (hué) the national anthem of the United States, here in Mexico, we do not have the same situation. “
“Our imports from the United States, which are quite important, do not generally affect the population,” he adds. They affect businesses, surely, and people who are rich enough to pay for imports from the United States such as alcohols and luxury things. ”
The Mexicans are however shaken by this situation, according to Mr. Rozental.
“It is certain that there is always an anti-American feeling in Mexico when the United States tells us that it is necessary to do this or do this,” he says. Mr. Trump, fortunately, did not ask that Mexico be the 52nd state. ”
