Power in Iran does not want to give way to dispute, whatever its form. The Iranian police thus arrested two young women after the broadcast of a video in which they dance in a Tehran cemetery without respecting the strict dress code in the country, local media reported on Friday.
“Not time ago, two people, in the Martyrs cemetery in Tehran, have, without taking into account the sacred character of the place, recorded a video clip with inappropriate clothes and movements contrary to customs and Sharia law”, Islamic law, police said in a statement quoted by the Tasnim news agency. Their actions “provoked strong public protests, especially from the families of the martyrs, and the two people were arrested by the police and then given to the judicial authorities,” added the police.
Strong disputes since the death of Mahsa Amini
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, women in Iran have been obliged to hide their hair in public places, where they are not allowed to dance either. But more and more women are now appearing without veil since the death of Mahsa Amini, as a sign of distrust against one of the ideological pillars of the Islamic Republic.
The death of this young Iranian, arrested for an offense supposed to the dress code, had led to an unprecedented wave of protest in September 2022. The repression of the movement left several hundred dead and caused the arrest of thousands of people, according to NGO.
