The chancellor of Mexico, Juan Ramon de la Fuenteand the new Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubiohad their first telephone conversation yesterday, Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in which they talked about “immigration and security issues,” the President, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed today, Wednesday.
“I want to inform you that yesterday the Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, spoke by telephone with the Secretary of State, Rubio; the conversations already began, it was a very good conversation, very cordial,” The President reported in her “Mañanera del Pueblo.”
The talk, Sheinbaum said, occurred after the president of the United States, Donald Trumpwill sign executive orders that directly affect the interests of Mexico, such as the declaration of emergency on the border, the designation of Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations and the reinstatement of the “Stay in Mexico” program.
Sheinbaum did not detail the conclusions of the call, but noted that “From there, a process of talks (conversations) between both governments begins.”
In addition, he rejected criticism from opponents, who demanded that he begin dialogue with Trump’s team earlier, as did the outgoing Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who visited him at Mar-A-Lago in Florida last year after the threat of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian products.
“This is important information for everyone to know, given this idea that there is no communication, yesterday it was formally established. It is the first call from the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the first one he made was to Mexico, and it was a very cordial call”, stood out.
On the other hand, the President of Mexico explained “that the care centers on the border are already being installed” to receive compatriots deported from USA.
The country is concerned about the mass deportations promised by Trump because Mexicans are close to half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States and their remittances represent almost 4% of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP). which in 2024 would have received an estimated record of 65 billion dollars.
In this sense, Claudia Sheinbaum rejected media reports about the alleged increase in arrivals of deportees to the northern border of Mexico by stating that “Yesterday there were fewer receptions from Mexicans than in previous days.”
“We are going to support our brothers and sisters who return. ‘Mexico embraces you’ is the program (to serve them) and here in Mexico they will always be received with open arms and, in addition, Mexico is experiencing a stellar moment,” said the President in the Treasury Room in the National Palace.
