In a recent statement, Banxico has confirmed that, starting in 2025, several families and denominations of banknotes in circulation will be withdrawn..
Family F
The F banknote family incorporates new security features, as well as changes in colors and sizes. The 50 peso bill was issued in 2006, and the 1,000 peso bill in 2008; both will cease to be in circulation.
Family D and D1
The D family banknotes, which have been in circulation since 1996, were designed to complete the change of monetary unit. These banknotes have similarities with those of the C family, but are expressed in “Pesos” of the current unit. A commemorative edition of the 75th anniversary of the Bank of Mexico, issued in 2000, stands out.
For their part, D1 banknotes share some characteristics with those of the D family, but include new security elements. The denominations of 50, 100, 200 and 500 pesos were issued in 2001, while the 20 peso bill, the first in polymer, was introduced in 2002. The 1,000 peso bill was issued in 2004. All D family banknotes, including commemorative editions, as well as the 1,000 peso D1, will also be withdrawn..
Family B and C
The banknotes of family B, introduced in 1993, have similarities with those of family A and are expressed in “new pesos”. The denominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 pesos will no longer be in legal circulation. As for family C, which began to circulate in 1994, all denominations of 10, 20, 50 and 100 pesos, which have different characteristics than those of family B, will be withdrawn.
This demonetization process seeks to modernize the monetary system and improve security in cash management in the country.
