A tragedy unfolded Wednesday morning at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, where a student opened fire in the cafeteria of the establishment, according to local authorities. Still according to the police, one student died, another was injured, and the perpetrator committed suicide shortly after the incident.
The shooting occurred around 11 a.m., leading to an immediate lockdown of the school which accommodates approximately 2,000 students. Law enforcement, including the Nashville Metropolitan Police, as well as agencies including the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), responded to the scene.
A precedent in March 2023
“We know that at 11:09 a.m., a person identified as a 17-year-old began shooting in the cafeteria. A student lost her life. The other is in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center,” said Don Aaron, spokesperson for the Nashville Metropolitan Police, as quoted by newschannel5.
In a statement, the school district said that the perpetrator of the shooting no longer posed a threat and that students would be gathered in the auditorium to organize their return to their families. This tragic event comes a few months after another deadly shooting that occurred in March 2023 in Nashville, in a private Christian school, where three 9-year-old children and three adults lost their lives.
