Sentenced Wednesday to 30 years of criminal imprisonment by the Deux-Sèvres Assize Court, Yunus Cosgun was found guilty of the murder of his ex-partner, Patricia Gomit, in June 2022. The man, who denies the facts, had already been convicted 13 times in the past.
Patricia Gomit, a 51-year-old social worker, filed a complaint against her former partner on May 8, 2022 for violence and death threats, explaining that she was “very afraid”. However, this procedure was dismissed due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
Overwhelming evidence according to the prosecution
A month later, on June 11, 2022, she was found dead at her home. “We are beyond murder. There was the desire to annihilate the victim, to destroy his body, to make him unrecognizable,” underlined attorney general Nina Blanchon, who had requested life imprisonment. Despite his denials throughout the trial, the accused was implicated by several material elements.
“There is evidence in this case,” said Fabien Arakelian, lawyer for the civil parties, during his pleadings. Among them, recordings of arguments in which Yunus Cosgun threatened the victim, traces of his blood found on the accused’s shorts, as well as video surveillance images showing his movements. “He fled to Spain after the events, but his DNA is the only one found on Patricia Gomit’s body. Everything converges to demonstrate that he is the author of the fatal blows,” added the attorney general.
A defense based on inconsistencies
For his part, Yunus Cosgun continued to deny the facts, putting forward a version of events described as fanciful by the prosecution. He claimed to have been kidnapped by unknown persons while he was at the victim’s house, forced to take them to Spain, before returning to the scene of the crime.
His lawyer, Me Ambroise Garlopeau, pleaded for acquittal, highlighting the absence of direct evidence: “There is nothing to say with certainty that he delivered the fatal blows. There are no witnesses, no weapons found, and no motive established. » He also minimized the victim’s text messages, where she confided her fears to relatives, arguing that they were not enough to demonstrate his client’s guilt.
