Liputan6.com, Jakarta – TikTok was officially blocked in the United States after the law blocking this Chinese application came into effect on January 19 2025. This step followed the decision of the US Supreme Court which rejected the appeal.
Quoting The VergeSunday (19/1/2025), TikTok blocking began at 10.30 am local time. Users who try to access TikTok and CapCut immediately receive a message that reads:
“We regret that the US law blocking TikTok went into effect on January 19, and forced us to temporarily suspend the service,” TikTok wrote.
TikTok said it was working to restore access to users in the US. In a statement, the company said, “we are working to restore our service in the US as soon as possible, and we appreciate your support. Please look forward to further information.”
TikTok Blocking Background
TikTok has been in the spotlight of the US government since 2020 over accusations that the social media application has the potential to threaten social security, due to the management of US user data by Chinese companies.
A law passed last year ultimately decided to ban these apps, unless ByteDance sells its ownership to a US-based company.
This decision certainly affects the millions of TikTok users in the US who actively use this application, both for entertainment and business. It is known that the application has around 170 million users.
Meanwhile, ByteDance is committed to working on a solution so that TikTok can be accessed again.
Apart from TikTok, the CapCut application is also blocked for its users in the United States. This is because the video editing application is owned by ByteDance.
