Nintendo more than ever in the game. The Japanese video game giant announced this Thursday its Switch 2, which should succeed its flagship console, the Switch, in 2025. The company hopes to replicate the success of its first console, which became the third best-selling machine of all time.
A programmed Big N
Mark your calendars! “The Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, will be released in 2025,” the Japanese company said in a press release, accompanied by a video presenting the technical aspects of the new console, while specifying that it will share more details during the broadcast of “Big N”, live, on April 2.
A larger screen, two USB ports
In this short announcement of 2 minutes 20, Nintendo presents a machine very similar to its big sister, all black, which has a larger screen, a larger removable support, while retaining removable controllers, the “joy -con » two-tone. According to the latest information, the controllers for the new Nintendo Switch 2 will have better manufacturing and better precision, in particular to avoid the “drift” problem encountered on the first models.
We can also see, at the very end, some images of a Mario Kart game. The last episode of this series, “Mario Kart 8”, sold more than 64 million copies on the first Switch. “Nintendo Switch 2 will run games that are exclusive to it, as well as physical and digital versions of Nintendo Switch games,” the company said. Also, the new console would have two USB ports, while the first version only had one.
Time for games!
However, “some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported by or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2,” it added, without elaborating. Thus, owners of titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” or “Splatoon” will be able to continue to enjoy them on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In addition to the few furtive images of “Mario Kart”, several sources report the release of games from the “Assassin’s Creed” license, which should be adapted for the Switch 2, including Mirage, Shadows, Valhalla, Odyssey and Origins. “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, “Pokémon Legends: ZA”, “Professor Layton and the New Steam World” and “Dragon Quest” should be available on the Switch 2.
Come and test it in Paris!
The Japanese giant also announced that events will be organized in several major cities around the world from April 4 to allow players to test its new console, such as Paris, New York and Tokyo.
For several weeks, speculation about this new console had intensified and numerous leaks had revealed several technical aspects.
A rising price?
Released in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch, which can be used both on the go and connected to a television, has become a huge success for Nintendo. It had sold 146 million copies at the end of September 2024, making it the third most popular console in the history of video games behind Sony’s PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS.
While the first Switch was sold at the price of €349 upon its release, the new Nintendo Switch 2 should see its price get closer to €400. But the Japanese giant has not yet communicated on the price of its new creation. The rest of the game… April 2.
