Many are familiar with the American helicopters shot down in Mogadishu in 1993 thanks to Ridley Scotts Black Hawk Down (2001). Netflix just announced a docuseries about the true story behind the war film: Surviving Black Hawk Down (2025).
‘In Their Own Words’
“Now the new docuseries turns the camera on the soldiers – and Somali people – who survived the Battle of Mogadishu, telling audiences in their own words what exactly happened,” Netflix said.
On October 3, 1993, when a US unit was sent to capture two of Aidid’s lieutenants in Mogadishu, Somalia, his militia retaliated and managed to shoot down two Black Hawk helicopters providing assistance from above. With each downed helicopter, soldiers were sent to free the men who had been in the plane, turning the military assault operation into a rescue mission.
People who were there
The docuseries features interviews with members of the Army Rangers and Delta Force, the special operations units that worked together on October 3, 1993. Residents of Mogadishu also speak, including militia members who fought against U.S. forces, local women trapped in a war zone with nowhere to hide, and a party photographer turned war reporter who brought his camera to the front lines from a personal sense of duty to record what happened at home.
