Trump’s mass deportations: They protest in Tijuana and are on alert due to US threats


The mayor of Tijuana, Ismael Burgueño Ruizdeclared this Wednesday, January 15, that there is an emergency alert in the city, the largest in the northern border of Mexicoout of “concern” that the president-elect of USA, Donald Trump“fulfill your threats” mass deportations.

The municipal president defended that the City Council had issued, by unanimous vote of the councilors, a declaration of emergency facing the possibility of a mass deportation of migrants when the Trump Government begins, who will take office next Monday.

The official, of ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), explained to the media that the measure was taken “because of worry of a contingency in that sense, in case the new president of the United States complies with his threats.”

The City Council opted for this declaration due “to the multiple statements published in various national and international media, in relation to a probable massive arrival of migrants across this border.”

The mayor also highlighted the president’s coordination with the federal government Claudia Sheinbaumand the state of Baja California.

“Only in this way, with the participation of the three levels of Government, will we be able to move forward in this situation that could materialize”held.

Sheinbaum commented in his morning conference that “he does not understand very well why” Tijuana declared this emergencybut he reiterated that his Government is “prepared” to “receive the deported Mexicans in the best way.”

In the country there are concerns about themassive exports promised by Trump because Mexicans are close to half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States and their remittances represent almost 4% of the gross domestic product (GDP) from Mexico.

The Tijuana mayor pointed out that the purpose “is to grant conditions of dignified treatment to people who are deported, as well as to privilege respect for human rights.” and guarantee a good return to those who could arrive by Tijuana”.

“For this reason and within the declaration of emergency, powers were granted to the Secretary of Government, Arnulfo Guerrero León, and to the agencies determined, to sign the legal instruments, acquisitions and contracting necessary to address this problem that would be atypical if registered. ”, he explained.

He explained that these powers will allow the leasing of movable and immovable property, the contracting of public services, internet, legal, administrative, technology, consulting services, personnel, equipment, supplies, various materials, adaptations of works, among other measures.

The municipal president also pointed out that the City Council seeks to install a “humanitarian bridge“to provide care to migrants, through municipal inter-institutional coordination, for which the use of extraordinary resources is required.

Furthermore, he explained that considering that this fact would not only impact the municipality of Tijuana, but all the cities of the northern border of Mexico.
