A prison guard taken hostage by an armed inmate in Isère

The Saint-Quentin-Fallavier penitentiary center was the scene of a hostage-taking this weekend, reports a press release from the Ufap-Unsa-Justice union. According to the article, an inmate grabbed a female guard by the neck and threatened her with a homemade weapon. He demanded a meeting with local management to request a transfer.

The supervisor was able to raise the alarm. Another inmate, a floor assistant, and two officers were able to control the attacker, who was placed in the disciplinary unit. The supervisor received five days of ITT and eight days of sick leave. The floor attendant was also injured during the altercation.

According to the union, a complaint has been filed and the matter should result in an immediate appearance. Ufap-Unsa-Justice denounces a lack of support from management, “an extremely degraded human resources context”, “more guaranteed staff safety”, and recurring incidents at the penitentiary center.
