Title holder in Melbourne, world No.1 Jannik Sinner qualified Monday for the 2nd round of the Australian Open thanks to his victory in three sets, including two tie-breaks, against the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (35th ).
On the Rod Laver Arena, the 23-year-old Italian won 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 in 2h40. Very close during the first two rounds, the duel swung in favor of Sinner when the latter finally managed to take his opponent’s faceoff at the start of the third set (2-0).
After a second break, which allowed him to lead 5-1, the champion with red curls concluded the game on his serve, from his first match point.
With this second success in three duels against Jarry (his only defeat dates back to 2019), the double Grand Slam winner joins his runner-up in the ATP ranking Alexander Zverev (2nd) in the 2nd round, while awaiting the entry into the running of N.3 Carlos Alcaraz World Cup scheduled for around 7:00 p.m. in Melbourne (9:00 a.m. in Paris).
Sinner, who played the first match of his 2025 season on Monday, will face in the second round the Japanese Taro Daniel (113th) or the Australian Tristan Schoolkate (173rd), beneficiary of an invitation from the organizers of the Australian Open.
