During President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning conference on January 6, the bases were presented so that Mexican mini electric cars, called Olinia, could become a reality, soon.
Working on a technology transfer model between the academic and research sectors, with support from the government and the eventual intervention of private initiative, Olinia intends to launch a range with three mini electric vehicles developed and manufactured within the country.
Representatives of the government and academic institutions linked to the project outlined that the characteristics thatThe models must have electric propulsion, be low cost, and be designed for urban mobility.
To achieve this, Roberto Capuano, in charge of the mobility project, pointed out that a multipurpose modular platform will be developed to keep costs low and be able to support vehicles called: Personal Mobility, Neighborhood Mobility and Last Mile Deliveries.
That is to say, There will be a two-door, two-seater model for personal mobility, followed by a four-door and, presumably, four-seater model for neighborhood mobility, as well as a small cargo van for deliveries, which together seek to improve safety conditions and polluting emissions in Mexican cities.
According to the government representative, the Olinia range of cars is working to offer its range of vehicles with prices ranging from 90 thousand to 150 thousand pesos, along with “fair” financing plans to make them truly accessible to a greater number of citizens.
For now, the authorities have allocated a budget of 25 million pesos for the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, together with educational institutions, to start the program, gathering specialized talent and evaluating the possible location of an assembly plant. which should take advantage of the supply chain established in regions such as Hermosillo or Puebla.
The goal, according to Mexican authorities, will be attend the opening match of the 2026 Soccer World Cup at the Azteca stadium aboard the first of the Olinia models, to show it to the world.
