The governor of California, Gavin Newsomrequested this Friday an independent investigation to clarify the loss of pressure in the hydrants and the alleged lack of water from the Santa reservoir Ynezlocated in Santa Barbara County. These problems occurred in the midst of several fires that, since Tuesday, have caused the death of at least ten people in the state.
Through the social network X, Newsom shared a letter addressed to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, in which demands an investigation into the reported failures as firefighters work to control the fires.
The governor noted that while he understands that hydrants are not designed to combat large wildfires, the loss of water supply is incompatible with the need to protect homes and ensure safe corridors for emergency evacuations.
In the letter, also addressed to the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bassthe governor specified that he has instructed state fire and water resources officials to prepare an “independent report” on this shortage.
“We need answers to ensure this does not happen again and we have all the resources available to fight these catastrophic fires”Newson said.
Since the start of the fires, more than 14 thousand 688 hectaresa surface equivalent to the Miami city and greater than that of cities like Boston o San Francisco.
