The beginning of 2025 brought with it an adjustment in the costs of various services and procedures in Mexico due to the increase in the value of the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA), which increased by 4.21%. This adjustment responds to the increase in the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), and is reflected in various rates, such as fines and administrative payments. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), The new UMA will be 113.14 pesos per day, an increase compared to 108.57 pesos in 2024.
This increase affects various procedures and fines related to the circulation of vehicles, among others. For example, in Mexico City, Drivers who do not respect the pedestrian crossing preference could face a fine of up to 2,262 pesos. In addition, those who attack or insult traffic personnel, or those who perform dangerous maneuvers to intimidate other drivers, will receive penalties of up to 3,394 pesos, depending on the severity of the infraction.
Another relevant aspect is the increase in penalties for noise pollution.. Those who use the horn excessively or generate annoying noises with the vehicle’s engine could be fined up to 1,131 pesos. In addition, drivers who do not respect the “Hoy No Circula” program will also face sanctions, which will range between 2,262 and 3,394 pesos, depending on the violation.
In addition to traffic fines, The increase in the UMA also impacts the cost of other proceduressuch as payment for vehicle ownership, license plates and construction permits. The Inegi explained that the UMA is an economic reference used in various laws and provisions to determine the amount of certain paymentswhich makes its adjustment have a wide scope in the country’s economy.
