The plan for a sequel The Passion of the Christ (2004) has been there for more than nine years, and now there finally seems to be some progress in the matter. As a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast, director Mel Gibson says that he has been working hard on the script and aims to start shooting next year
20 years later
The last update we provided on the project dates back to 2020 and describes Jim Caviezel’s enthusiasm for the first drafts of the script. The actor played the role of Jesus in the original 2004 film and he says it will be “the greatest movie in the history of the world.” Even though more than 20 years have passed, Gibson still plans to cast Caviezel in the role of Jesus. He does indicate that he wants to use “a few techniques” such as CGI to rejuvenate the actor.
A Acid trip
The Passion of the Christ tells the story of Jesus and his last 12 hours before his death. The film ends with Jesus’ crucifixion, and in the Bible he is resurrected three days later. The story of The Passion of the Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ will pick up the thread here. Gibson hopes production on the sequel can start soon: “I hope sometime next year. It’s going to take a lot because it’s a acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it,” says the director about the script he wrote with his brother and Randall Wallace (Braveheart (1995)) has worked on.
My brother and I and Randall all got together about this. So there’s some good minds put together, but there’s also some crazy stuff. And I think to really tell the story well, you really have to start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, in another realm. You must go to hell.
