The elected president of the United States, Donald Trumpused the social network Truth Social this Thursday to issue his first official statement on the political situation in Venezuela. In his message, he acknowledged Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate elected president of the South American country.
Trump also highlighted the crucial role of Maria Corina Machadoactivist and central figure of the Venezuelan opposition, as well as González, whom he described as representatives of the popular will and the fight for democracy in Venezuela.
This statement comes after the recent arrest and subsequent release of María Corina Machado, arrested during the massive demonstrations that took place in Caracas. days before González’s inauguration, scheduled for January 10.
“María Corina Machado and President-elect González are peacefully expressing the voices and will of the Venezuelan people with hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating against the regime,” Trump wrote on his social networks. “These freedom fighters must not come to harm and must remain safe and alive.”
