The new Swedish crime series is now on Netflix The breakthrough (2025) about a mysterious double murder. For everyone who has already seen the four episodes, the big question is: will there be a second season of the compelling krimi? In this article we discuss all the news surrounding a possible new season.
Unexpected hero
The series is based on the double murder in Linköping, Sweden, which was finally solved in 2004 after 16 years. It was a genealogist who made the breakthrough, because for the first time in Europe a murder could be solved through genealogical research.
The new series is a fictional story about the unexpected hero, an unlikely collaboration between a detective and a genealogist and the hunt for a murderer. But, Netflix points out, “it’s also a story about how an unsolved crime affects a society and what happens to people left without answers to both ‘Who?’ like ‘Why?’.”
This clip is spoken in English as the original Swedish trailer is not available in all countries. See the Swedish variant at the bottom of the article. The series itself can of course be seen in the original language.
Will there be a second season? The breakthrough on Netflix?
Despite the great interest in the new series, a second season seems unlikely. The breakthrough is a miniseries, which means that it will (most likely) remain one season. It is rare that a miniseries is renewed for a second season, as once happened with Tiger King (2020–2021). A second season for it The breakthrough is probably not an option, but you never know with Netflix. In the meantime, you will stay informed here of all the news about a possible new season.
