During the conversation, Joly “reiterated Canada’s support for all those fighting so that the will of Venezuelans is respected.” Joly added: “Canada recognizes that Edmundo González Urrutia won the July 28 elections and is the elected president of Venezuela.”

The conversation between Joly and Machado and Canada’s statement in support of González Urrutia occurs one day before Nicolás Maduro assumes a new term as Venezuelan president amid allegations of fraud by the opposition after the July 28 elections.
