Liputan6.com, Jakarta – The giant social networking company, Meta, has just appointed an important figure in the Republican Party – the same party as President-elect Donald Trump – namely Joel Kaplan, as Chief Global Affairs Officer.
Joel Kaplan replaces Nick Clegg who resigned some time ago.
The change comes ahead of the inauguration of US president-elect Donald Trump and amid the company’s efforts to repair its relationship with Trump.
So far, Trump has often criticized the company’s policy on political content. Even Donald Trump threatened to imprison Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
Quoting ReutersMonday (6/12/2025), previously Joel Kaplan reported to his superior, Nick Clegg. Clegg is a Meta executive who was formerly Deputy Prime Minister of England and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
This is also not the first time Meta has hired someone with a political background as an executive officer. Another Meta executive who also has a political background from the Republican party is Kevin Martin.
Later, he will replace Kaplan’s old position as head of global policy, Clegg said on social media.
“At the start of the new year, I felt that the time was right to leave my role as President of Global Affairs at Meta,” said Clegg.
Nick Clegg also said that his successor, Joel Kaplan, was the right person to take up his old job.
The collapse of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp caused losses for Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg allegedly suffered losses of up to IDR 85 trillion due to the decline in Facebook shares.
