In the US they could be enjoyed from the end of November Wicked (2024)while we still had to wait until December 5. Nevertheless, the new musical spectacle has already managed to break a record. It is the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical ever worldwide, surpassing its predecessor Oh mama! (2008) in.

In Wicked we follow Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, the well-known Witches of Oz who form a close friendship during their magical search for their true identity. Stephen Schwartz wrote the original musical in which Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel played the iconic roles for the first time. After six weeks, the new film has already grossed $634 million, while Oh mama! had collected US$611 million (not adjusted for inflation) by the end of its release.

In the US, the new film has grossed a whopping $424 million, surpassing that already a few weeks ago Grease (1978) as the biggest Broadway film at the domestic box office with $188.62 million. However, the new records are quite remarkable considering other musical films in recent years, such as The Color Purple (2024), West Side Story (2021) in In the Heights (2021)have not performed well at the worldwide box office. The figures of Wicked either way, it bodes well for the sequel Wicked: For Good (2025) which will be released in cinemas next year.
