The Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Mexico (FGR) reports that it is investigating the mayor and authorities of the municipality of Coalcomán, Michoacanafter a video went viral where they deliver gifts to the population, allegedly sent by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”, leader of the New Generation Cartel (CNG) and who is wanted by the United States government.
The FGR opened an investigation file against Anavel Ávila Castrejón, mayor of Calcomán, who, along with her collaborators and residents of the municipality, publicly thanked the gifts that “El Mencho” apparently sent them, at a Christmas inn held in recent days. in the main square of the town.
The investigation specifies that the mayor allowed a blanket to be placed in the square, a few meters from the municipal presidency.
The investigation also includes the trustees (city council officials) Caín Salvador Sánchez Mendoza and Mauricio Godínez Madrigal, as well as the director of the Municipal Police, Rafael Vargas Reyna, who guarded the event, together with agents from the Civil Guard.
As well as the councilors Jairo Ávila Cervantes, Vicente González Barahona, Urania Velen Ramos Casares, Arely López Figueroa, Uriel Orozco Arredondo, Francisco Javier Andrade Barajas, Saraí Mora Guízar, Patricia Chávez Mendoza, José Rafael López Ixtas, Jesús Blanco Barajas, Jessica Sánchez Abarca and Paola Nereyda Guízar Zepeda.
In addition, the FGR is investigating three operators of “El Mencho”drug trafficker of Michoacan origin and for whom the United States government offers a reward of 15 million dollars for his capture.
For his part, the governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, demanded that Ávila Castrejón leave office, and urged the Prosecutor’s Office to “thoroughly investigate the municipal authorities of Coalcomán for their probable connection with a criminal group.”
In a brief statement, Ávila Castrejón distanced himself from the accusations against him, and assured that he has been “vigilant that action is taken under the law and under no circumstances would he participate in any situation apologizing for crime.”
Coalcomán is located in the Sierra Madre del Sur, between the limits of Michoacán and Jalisco, where the CNG maintains a strong fight against the Tepalcatepec Cartel, headed by Juan José Farías Álvarez, alias “El Abuelo”, a former partner of “Mencho”. “which in 2013 organized, financed and infiltrated civilian self-defense groups.
