The interim Government of Bangladesh formally requested this Monday from India to facilitate the extradition of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Dhaka, so that she can be tried in several criminal proceedings opened against her, which include accusations of crimes against humanity or genocide.
“We have sent a note verbale to the Indian Government saying that Bangladesh wants her back here for legal proceedings“Interim Foreign Minister Touhid Hossain told the media today, according to the Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo.
Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, confirmed that they had received the Bangladeshi letterin which they clarified that the extradition of the former president was requested, but they did not go into more details.
Hasina fled Bangladesh on August 5, after several weeks of anti-government protests that led to the fall of his Government, and has been in India since then, protected by the Government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bangladeshi authorities have opened several criminal proceedings against Hasina and his collaborators since his departure, which include charges of murder, torture, kidnapping, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Besides, They have revoked his diplomatic passport and issued an arrest warrantwhile insisting that New Delhi allow his extradition to stand trial.
In this sense, the acting Minister of Interior, Jahangir Alam, told the media today that there is an extradition treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi that would allow Hasina to be returned to Bangladesh.
However, This treaty has exceptions to protect cases of, for example, political persecution.

The relationship between both countries has deteriorated after the fall of the former president. Yunus conveyed his displeasure to Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a meeting in Dhaka this month over New Delhi hosting Hasina.
