The Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco) has released a recent analysis in which it identifies the highest quality refried bean brands, helping consumers avoid harmful ingredients.
Beans, an essential component in the Mexican diet, not only stand out for their flavor, but also for the multiple benefits they provide to the body.
Properties of beans: a complete food
Before detailing which are the most recommended brands according to Profeco, it is important to highlight the health benefits that beans offer.

According to the National Library of Medicine, legumes like beans are a rich source of vegetable protein, fiber, B vitamins, iron, folic acid, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and zinc.
Another significant advantage is that most bean varieties contain very little fat. Compared to meat, they have a similar nutritional profile, but with lower amounts of iron and no animal fats.
Thanks to their high concentration of proteins and nutrients, beans are an ideal alternative for those looking to replace meat consumption, being a popular choice among vegetarians.

Profeco’s analysis of refried beans
Profeco conducted an exhaustive study to evaluate 18 brands of packaged beans, dividing the products into two categories: 11 refried beans and 7 whole beans. Among the aspects considered are:
- Net content
- Labeled
- Amount and type of fat
- Calories
- sodium level
The study confirmed that all the products analyzed met the net weight and drained mass indicated on their labels, in addition to adhering to labeling regulations.

Regarding sodium, the brands evaluated managed levels ranging between 316 and 453 milligrams, while the fat content varied. between 0.4 and 4.4 grams per 100 grams of product.
Likewise, it was identified that the beans analyzed contained different types of fat, such as vegetable, pork or both.
However, two products stood out for having low levels of fat or not containing it:
- Isadora, low-fat bay beans: Presentation of 430 grams, with an approximate price of 15.34 pesos.
- La Sierra, fat-free bay beans: 580 gram packaging, available for around 13.89 pesos.

With this study, Profeco seeks to provide clear information so that consumers can make informed decisions when purchasing refried beans, prioritizing both the quality of the product and its impact on health.
