Great movie. Great acting from both ladies.
In 1920, an English coastal town witnesses a dark, absurd scandal. We follow two neighbors: the deeply religious Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and the rough Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and her neighbors start receiving angry letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, the foul-mouthed Rose is sued.
The anonymous letters cause a national uproar and a lawsuit follows. But when the women of the town, led by policewoman Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is wrong and that Rose may not be the perpetrator after all.
