Google Releases Android XR, Ready to Challenge Apple visionOS

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Google has just announced its newest operating system, called Android XR. XR itself is an abbreviation of extended reality, a term that includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technology.

Quoted from GSM ArenaSunday (15/12/2024), Android XR is predicted to be a direct competitor to Apple’s VisionOS which is used in the Vision Pro headset.

According to Google, they plan to bring many of their applications to Android XR, starting from Maps, YouTube, Chrome, to Photos. Not only that, this OS will also support other Play Store applications.

Not only applications, Gemini AI will also be one of the main features in Android XR. So, this AI will help users in various tasks.

Currently, Android XR is still in the early stages of development, but Google plans to launch products running this operating system next year. One of the companies said to be presenting a device with Android XR is Samsung.

Apart from headsets, this operating system is also projected to be ready to support use on glasses, thereby providing a smoother experience. It is stated that glasses with Android XR will also be supported by Gemini.

The presence of Gemini is said to be able to help users get useful information such as directions, translations, including incoming messages, without needing to take out their cellphone first.

Google said they would soon conduct live trials for a prototype of glasses running Android XR. The plan is that this trial will be carried out on a small group of users.
