The health of the Quebec cyclist lost in the jungle for 48 hours in Mexico is slowly improving.
Steve Poirier, 47, is gradually recovering from his misadventure in Playa del Carmen. After assessment, his state of health does not require hospitalization.
“He was afraid of dying,” said his uncle, André Poirier. Relieved but in shock, the survivor slept a lot.
“Christmas miracles exist,” relatives also wrote on the Web after a successful rescue.
According to their story, it was thanks to young children from a Mayan village who saw him heading into the jungle, and to alerts to the authorities, that the emergency services and numerous volunteers traveled 13 km to finally find him.

The group then had to return on the same long route in the opposite direction to get out of this wooded area with the Quebecer alive.
Without a cellular network, communications were rather difficult in this hostile environment.
The disappearance of Steve Poirier was reported Saturday afternoon in Mexico. He was finally found safe after 48 hours in the jungle.
The worst was avoided for the cyclist who was last seen in the town of Nuevo Xcan, in the municipality of Lazaro Cardenas, Quintana Roo.
Equipped with a gravel bike, he may have strayed from the road before getting lost.
Significant mobilization on site and major efforts by several acquaintances in Quebec helped save his life.
