Joe Biden said on Sunday, December 8, that Bashar al-Assad should “to be accountable” for the “hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians” who were “mistreated, tortured and killed”. During a speech at the White House, the American president declared that the fall of the Syrian president represented a “historic opportunity” for the Syrians of “build a better future”even if this situation creates “risks” and of “uncertainty”.
Because he also emphasized that “some of the rebel groups” having participated in the lightning offensive which swept away half a century of the Assad dynasty in Syria, after 13 years of a war which left nearly half a million dead, had “history of terrorism and human rights violations”. The coalition of rebels that entered Damascus overnight from Saturday to Sunday is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group which is a former branch of Al-Qaeda. “We have taken note of the statements of the leaders of these rebel groups in recent days, and they are saying the right things at this time, but as they prepare to take on greater responsibilities, we will evaluate not only their words, but also their actions”warned the American president.
