The president of the United States, Joe Biden attributed this Sunday the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria to the weakness of Iran and Russia at a press conference after Islamist insurgents entered Damascus and ended regime control.
In Biden’s opinion, the fall of Al Assad is “direct result of the blows that Ukraine and Israel have dealt in self-defensewith the tireless support of the United States”, and that during his mandate Washington “pursued a clear and principled policy towards Syria”.

“That (Assad’s fall) is because Ukraine, backed by American allies, erected a wall against invading Russian forces.”“, inflicting massive damage on Russian forces that left Russia unable to protect its main ally in the Middle East,” Biden said from the White House.
In that sense, Biden noted that Assad’s main supporters “for years” have been Iran, Hezbollah and Russia, but that “during the last week his support collapsed.”
“For the first time in history, neither Russia nor Iran nor Hezbollah could defend this abominable regime in Syria,” the president stressed.

“In the last week, his (Assad’s) support collapsed, because all three of those three are now weaker today than when I came to the White House. And let’s remember why. After Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, when most of the world responded in horror, Iran and its satellite allies launched a multi-front war against Israel. “That was a historic mistake by Iran,” he said.
Biden took some of the credit thanks to a combination of sanctionsUS military presence in Syria and support for Israeli military operations against extremist groups in the Middle East.
The American president, who this Sunday met with his national security team to learn about the situation in Syria, celebrated the fall of Assad: “This regime brutalized, tortured and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocents.”
