Recently, the death of 13 minors between 0 and 14 years old was reported in the State of Mexico, presumably due to an outbreak of the Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria. as reported by the Ministry of Health (Ssa), through the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE).
In three public hospitals and one private hospital, 20 cases have been treated, of which 15 have been confirmed as Klebsiella oxytoca infections. Given this, the authorities activated the Public Health Incident Management Command at the local and federal level.
According to an official statement, Initial investigations suggest that the outbreak could be related to contamination of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions or the supplies used for their application. These solutions, manufactured by the company SAFE, are being analyzed as part of the investigations, although the authorities do not rule out other possible causes.
Likewise, a multidisciplinary team is already evaluating the conditions under which intravenous solutions are administered and reviewing safety protocols in the affected medical units.
Cases from the Monica Pretelini Sáenz Maternal Perinatal Hospital
Through a statement, the Monica Pretelini Sáenz Maternal Perinatal Hospital, located in Toluca, indicated that monitoring is ongoing and according to today’s report, no new probable or confirmed cases have been identified. The infection is presumably under control.
So far, four cases of infection have been confirmed, of which one resulted in death, representing a fatality rate of 25 percent. The exposed population amounts to 35 patients, of which three remain hospitalized, although they are reported stable and with favorable clinical evolution.
Currently, we are awaiting the results of control blood cultures to confirm the eradication of the bacteria in affected patients.
As part of preventive actions and containment measures, The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) issued a health alert for the immobilization of intravenous parenteral nutrition solutions prepared as of November 21, 2024 by the company Productos Hospitalarios, SA de CV, which have been identified as the possible origin of the contamination.
In addition, daily meetings of the State Command are held, with the participation of the IMSS-BIENESTAR State Coordination, to evaluate the situation and coordinate the necessary actions. These meetings are held twice a day at the facilities of the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Health continues to work on epidemiological surveillance and the implementation of measures to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
What is Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria?
The bacteria Klebsiella oxytoca is a microorganism that can be found in the human gastrointestinal tract and in the environment. However, in vulnerable patients, such as newborns or immunocompromised people, can cause serious infections, like those detected in this outbreak. This case joins others reported in the State of Mexico, where similar infections have been identified in different maternal and child hospitals.
