A collision between a bus and a car on Friday in Loja province in southern Ecuador left at least 16 people dead and eight injured, the national relief agency reported.
“At this stage, there are 16 dead and eight injured, who are being treated in different health centers,” the agency said on WhatsApp messaging.
The accident occurred on the road linking the Andean towns of Loja and Catamayo, close to the border with Peru.
“Firefighters, units of the national police and the Ministry of Public Health are mobilized to the accident,” the agency said.
The coach collided with an oncoming car and overturned spectacularly, according to local media.
Road accidents are one of the main causes of death in Ecuador.
