An alleged member of the MS13 gang was arrested on November 22 by US customs officers after mistakenly driving to the Peace Bridge border, linking Buffalo to Niagara Falls.
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents “encountered a 24-year-old Honduran citizen who took the wrong exit and went to the Peace Bridge,” CBP said in a statement.
As the driver did not have a passport or any other documents required to cross the border at the first checkpoint, he was escorted to a secondary checkpoint.
It was at this point that officers were able to identify the individual as Franklyn Hernandez Giron.
They later discovered that he was a member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, a criminal organization active notably in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and Spain, according to the press release.
The driver was taken into custody and is expected to face deportation proceedings.
