Artificial intelligence guru Sam Altman on Sunday showed confidence in the Trump administration’s ability to support the development of this industry, while believing that Congress should legislate to regulate this new technology.
Questioned on the conservative channel Fox News, the boss of OpenAI, Sam Altman, who became known around the world after the release of ChatGPT in 2022, affirmed that to be able to compete, in particular with China, in terms of ‘artificial intelligence, “infrastructure in the United States is extremely important”.
“I believe President-elect (Donald) Trump will be very good at this. I look forward to working with his administration on this.”he declared.
Sam Altman clarified that A.I. “requires huge amounts of infrastructure, energy, computer chips, data centers, and we need to build that here, we need to be able to have the best AI infrastructure in the world, to be able to be leaders in technology and capabilities ».
He was also asked about the need for the US Congress to legislate safeguards and restrictions.
To the question “do you think Congress should legislate? »he replied: “I think so, at some point. When, in what form, I don’t know”.
He added that “for any technology of this magnitude, I would expect legislation to be passed at some point”.
OpenAI and Sam Altman must, however, face legal proceedings launched by Elon Musk, boss of the AI startup xAI launched in 2023, and future member of Donald Trump’s administration.
On Friday, Elon Musk again asked the American justice system to prevent OpenAI from transforming into an entirely for-profit company.
He participated in the launch of OpenAI in 2015, under the promise that it would be a non-profit structure. But, according to him, Mr. Altman “manipulated and deceived”ultimately deciding to join forces with digital giant Microsoft.
Since divesting from OpenAI, Elon Musk has been among the main critical voices, warning of the risks that AI represents, according to him, for the future of humanity, despite the launch of his own startup of artificial intelligence.
