Around four thousand 500 people gathered this morning in the streets of the Downtown area and Liberation Square to make a Call for awareness to detect prostate cancer and diabetes in time in Jalisco and Mexico, two of the main causes of death in men in the country.
The contingent left from Jardín del Santuario, located on Alcalde Avenue, and arrived around 9:00 a.m. at the Plaza de la Liberación, in front of the Degollado Theater, where they performed physical exercises. The vast majority of attendees wore a blue garment, while Karla López, delegate of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), indicated that the event was held within the framework of the month of comprehensive men’s health and the National Day against prostate cancer, which is commemorated on November 29.
“All gentlemen over 40 years of age who have a direct history of prostate cancer in the family, be they fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins, You have to, from the age of 40, have an exam every year, every two years. And everyone over 60 has to get screened, so that’s what’s not being done. It can be through the simple rectal examination in family medicine units, a prostate antigen measurement or, failing that, a prostate ultrasound or even a biopsy, but that is what is not being done,” said the delegate.

The doctor added that 7 in 10 men nationally diagnosed with prostate cancer are diagnosed at a late stagewhich can lead to amputation of the genitals and even death. The main Risk factors for this disease are age, genes, eating habits, smoking and alcoholism.
Meanwhile, so far this year Two thousand 940 cases of prostate cancer have been registered in Jalisco, which represents 10 percent of the detections in Mexico.
“If a patient is detected in the early stage, it can be managed with a medication that is even taken orally. It is taken for a year and the tumor mass decreases, it may even disappear. But if it is already detected in later stages, this treatment option is not viable, it is already radiotherapy, chemotherapy and even very aggressive surgeries such as castration,” López added.
Meanwhile, In Mexico there are five million people who suffer from diabetes, while in Jalisco there are 388,937 people. The delegate of IMSS He announced that next year it is estimated that the number will rise to one million in the state alone. The main risk factors for this disease are smoking, inactivity, family history and high cholesterol..
“People who are actively working do not go for screenings, they go until their mouth goes sideways, or until they faint or something happens to them at work, and their blood pressure is very high, or blood glucose,” concluded the delegate.
