As 2024 comes to a close, lMexicans prepare to celebrate the traditional December festivities. This month, full of traditions, is ideal to enjoy family moments, away from the hustle and bustle of work and everyday worries. However, It is important to know which holidays are and which of them are considered mandatory rest according to the Federal Labor Law (LFT)..
According to the official LFT calendar, in December 2024, The only mandatory day of rest will be Wednesday, December 25, Christmas Day. On this date, companies are obliged to give their employees the day off, with pay. This measure allows workers to enjoy Christmas celebrations without the pressure of work.
Although there are other important holidays in December, not all of them are considered non-working days under labor legislation.. These dates include December 12, Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe; December 16, start of the posadas; December 19, beginning of school holidays at the basic level; December 24, Christmas Eve, and December 31, New Year’s Eve. Despite their cultural relevance, these dates are not stipulated as mandatory rest days in the LFT.
It is important to highlight that, During these non-work holidays, it will be up to each company or employer to decide whether to grant their workers time off.. Therefore, employees who work on these dates will not receive extra compensation, since they are considered normal work days.
Finally, If a worker shows up to work on a mandatory rest day, the LFT establishes that he or she will have the right to receive a double salary for that day.. This means that, if they have to work on December 25, the worker will be able to obtain additional financial compensation.
