Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld gaming console which is claimed to be able to run PlayStation 5 (PS5) games directly.
This information emerged from a Bloomberg report, where an anonymous source said this device is scheduled for release in the next few years.
“Unlike the PlayStation Portal which focuses on streaming, this new gaming handheld is designed to offer a gaming experience equivalent to the PS5 natively,” as quoted by Polygon, Wednesday (27/11/2024).
Responding to the Domination of Nintendo and Steam Deck
The premium handheld gaming market is growing rapidly, starting with the launch of the Steam Deck by Valve, and is dominated by Nintendo with the Switch device.
This is also an incentive for Sony to return to this segment. In fact, Microsoft is said to be considering a similar device.
“The handheld device market is promising, but difficult to penetrate because Nintendo is so strong,” said one industry analyst.
Sony has previously tried its luck in this market with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita. Unfortunately, both devices were less successful despite having a loyal fan base.
Technology Potential and Challenges
Sony’s gaming handheld is expected to be able to break through the limitations of the previous generation. Apart from running PS5 games natively, this device can be a complement for gamers who want flexibility without relying on a streaming connection.
However, this project is still in its early stages. Therefore, there is a possibility of development handheld gaming discontinued if Sony decides to change its strategic priorities.
PlayStation Portal: First Steps
Currently, Sony has presented the PlayStation Portal allowing gamers to play PS5 games via streaming from the console or cloud services. This PS5-equivalent gaming handheld, if released, will be a stronger and more competitive successor.
Sony’s new handheld console has great potential to become a serious challenger in a market dominated by Nintendo and Steam Deck.
Even though it is still in the early stages of development, anticipation for this device is quite high, especially for Sony fans wanting a portable and flexible gaming device.
