« In » season 2024 could not end any other way: becoming this year the new boss of the world circuit, Jannik Sinner won the ATP Masters, offering himself his first home title on Sunday in front of the excited Turin public.
Taylor Fritz tried everything, but the American did not succeed in spoiling the end of season party of the world No.1: uncompromising, Sinner won in two sets 6-4, 6-4 for his eighth title of the year, the 18th of his career.
“It’s been an extraordinary year and it’s wonderful to end it like this by winning my first title in Italy in front of this incredible crowd”welcomed Sinner in a football stadium atmosphere.
The figures for his year are dizzying: the player from South Tyrol, this German-speaking region on the borders of Italy and Austria, won 70 matches, losing six times, all against players in the world’s top 10, including three against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the only one to overshadow him in 2024.

As he remained undefeated all week – without losing a single set, a first in the event since Ivan Lendl in 1986 -, the big redhead pocketed an enhanced check for 4.9 million dollars (4.4 million EUR) which are added to the 12 million won on the ATP circuit this season and the six million for his victory in an exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia.
Fritz choked
In an overheated Inalpi Arena, Sinner, 23, finished 2024 as he started it with a prestigious title, ten months after his coronation at the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam title.

And it’s not over: next week, the new hero of Italian sport can still win with his teammates, as in 2023, the Davis Cup, the eight-nation final phase of which begins Tuesday in Malaga (Spain).
A year after his defeat in the final of this “masters tournament” against Novak Djokovic, forfeited for this 2024 edition of an event that he has won seven times, Sinner this time did not miss his chance.
Winner the day before in the semi-final of world No.2 Alexander Zverev, Fritz, 27, was not unworthy, but the relentless hitting machine Sinner stifled him with 14 aces and 28 winning points.
The American held out for six games, before giving up his serve for the first time on a winning drop shot from Sinner, also very effective on his opponent’s second service balls.
In Italy until 2030
Under constant pressure from Sinner, the American broke even earlier in the second set in a fifth game that he had started well to lead 30-0, before a double fault, a drop shot in the net and three winning shots from Italian.

Sinner concluded his final on his first match point to become the first Italian to win the “masters tournament”.
“I had a great tournament, I think there were times I couldn’t play better (…) I tried to improve compared to last year, to find the keys to win this final, I’m happy to have managed this pressure”he appreciated.
Already beaten by Sinner in the final of the last US Open (6-3, 6-4, 7-5) and in the group stage this week (6-4, 6-4), Fritz hoped to win the most prestigious title of his career and end the wait for the United States who have not won this end-of-season tournament for 25 years with Pete Sampras in 1999.
“Jannik played at an incredible level, truly incredible”he admitted.
He will console himself by climbing one place on Monday in the ATP rankings to finish the best season of his career at 4th place in the world.
The « Sinnermania » is it not ready to disappear: the ATP has in fact announced that its Masters will remain in Italy until 2030.
