The holidays are approaching, and so Disney is treating its subscribers to a short film that will set the right mood. Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi writes an “enchanting original story about the surprises and friendships of childhood”. A Disney+ subscription is not necessary: you can easily watch the contribution on YouTube.
Special friendship
A Disney Holiday Short: The Boy & The Octopus (2024) is about the special friendship between the two title characters, which arises when the tentacle-rich animal attaches itself to the boy’s head during a beach holiday. Once home, the latter decides that the octopus deserves to see more of the world just like him. He sets a plan in motion to make that happen:
Tie with the holidays
Disney commissioned the short film because the company says it has “had a connection with the holidays for generations.” “Only Disney could have made something like this… with me,” Waititi said in response. The director’s most recent film, Next Goal Wins (2023)was released in Dutch theaters at the beginning of this year.
You may of course still wonder what a short film that kicks off with a beach holiday has to do with the Christmas holidays. This has everything to do with the film that the boy and the octopus watch when they return home, and with the period in which the sequel is set. Have you viewed the result and would you like to give the short film a score? You can do that on the film page.
