Rigoberto Martínez Sandoval, prominent basketball coach and teacher, was shot dead in front of the Lázaro Cárdenas Normal School, in Putla Villa de Guerrero, Oaxaca.
The coach, known for directing the Triquis children of Oaxaca, barefoot champions, and for directing the basketball academy “Rigo’s Oaxaca,” Martínez was also a member of the Triqui Struggle Unification Movement (MULT).
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Oaxaca, Through the Mixteca Regional Deputy Prosecutor’s Office, he confirmed that Martínez died from gunshot wounds. After receiving the report of the discovery of the body, a team of experts and investigators was sent to the area to carry out initial procedures and collect evidence at the crime scene, in an effort to clarify the facts and find those responsible.
The Triqui Struggle Unification Movement (MULT) condemned the murder and demanded justice, pointing out that the attackers are hiding in the region. Martínez’s death leaves a void not only in the sports community, but also in the social and community struggle of Oaxaca, where he was known as a defender of the rights of indigenous peoples and a promoter of sports in marginalized areas.
