On November 10, 2024, around 1,122 mariachis met in Mexico City’s Zócalo with the goal of breaking the Guinness record for the largest number of musicians playing together in unison. beating the previous record that belonged to Guadalajara in 2013, with a total number of 600 musicians.
José de Jesús Hernández, president of the National Chamber of Commerce of Mexico City (Canaco), published an open call on November 7, where he expected at least 700 musicians to break the record. in honor of the closing of the first World Mariachi Congress, an event that brings together music, dance and free concerts in order to celebrate our Mexican roots, praise traditions and promote tourism.

Consequently, last Sunday around one in the afternoon, a total of 1,122 musicians were able to gather and come to the plaza, breaking the new Guinness record. The mariachis performed three songs; they started with “The son of the black woman”an emblematic song of this musical genre, at the time of the record’s establishment they performed “Cute little heaven” traditional song that has been representative of Mexican culture, and ended with the performance of “The king” by José Alfredo Jiménez to celebrate and close this event.
Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, mayor and host of the event, recognized all the musicians who made this initiative possible, in addition to promoting together with the government of Mexico City that this be an event that can be carried out annually to continue promoting tourism and the importance of mariachi in the culture of Mexico, musical genre that was recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since November 2011.
