On the occasion of Veterans Day, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, delivered a speech full of emotion and solemnity at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. An event which takes place in a tense political context, less than a week after a presidential election marked by deep divisions, and before an expected meeting with President-elect Donald Trump scheduled for this Wednesday.
In his speech, President Joe Biden called on Americans to transcend political divides to honor commitments made to veterans. Citing former President Abraham Lincoln, he reaffirmed America’s “sacred promise”: to prepare service members sent into combat and support their families, whether they return or not.
“Healing the wounds of the nation”
“We have many obligations, but only one is truly sacred: to care for those who serve our nation and their loved ones,” he said. Referring to recent tensions in the country, Joe Biden added that this commitment “is not based on party or politics, but on a promise that unites us all.” He urged Americans to “heal the wounds of the nation,” in a collective effort to regain unity.
Furthermore, Joe Biden announced that this ceremony would be the last in Arlington where he would be held as Commander in Chief. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to lead you, to serve you, to care for you and to defend you, just as you defended us,” he said, with visible emotion.
In the presence of Kamala Harris
The president also highlighted the initiatives taken by his administration to improve the living conditions of veterans. He discussed efforts to provide better access to health care, reduce suicides among veterans and support military families. Joe Biden also looked back on his controversial decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan, a decision that left an indelible mark on his presidency.
Earlier in the ceremony, Vice President Kamala Harris was greeted by Karen Durham-Aguilera, executive director of the Army National Military Cemeteries. Kamala Harris, visibly moved by the loud applause from the audience, responded with a gesture of gratitude by placing her hand on her chest.
