Sheinbaum Government announces “Enchula tu Tienda” program; what is it about?

María Luisa Albores, in charge of Food for Wellbeing, announced the “Enchula tu Tienda” program to benefit producers while Julio Berdegué Sacristán, head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, highlighted the rescue of the National Seed Producer (Pronase).

In Calera Zacatecas, where President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo attended a meeting with farmers and the supervision of the Rural Support Program, Albores recalled the merger of Segalmex with Diconsa for the creation of Alimentación para el Bienestar, a new institution that will be in charge of buying from small producers and promoting the fair price for the sale of honey, coffee, cocoa and other products that will be sold in the stores.

He pointed out that the Diconsa stores will become Stores for Well-being, whose motto will be: “We generate happiness.” The approach is to strengthen the supply network and the number of stores in the most remote communities, where supply opportunities are limited.

María Luis Albores highlighted that in the Sheinbaum government, actions are being carried out to renew the essence and identity of the rural supply program that was created 45 years ago: “The Wellbeing Stores will be born in January 2025 with a process of image change and rehabilitation, through a program called Enchula tu Tienda.”

“This change is not only a change of image, it is not painting a different color, our commitment is to continue deepening well-being from Mexican humanism on which the fourth transformation has been based. That is why with the Wellness Stores we will seek to ensure that Mexican families have access to healthier foods to contribute to making everyone’s human right to food a reality,” he added, also pointing out the Transformation for Wellbeing program that will provide products of “high nutritional quality” at affordable prices.

For his part, Berdegué expressed his support for Zacatecas producers and opted for bean self-sufficiency.

“We want to significantly increase the delivery of very good quality seed. We are aiming for the next spring-summer cycle, the goal of delivering here, in this state, 7 thousand 82 tons of very good quality seed to small and medium producers for 43 thousand bean producers.

“This amount of seed is 13 times more than the seed that was delivered last year with the support of the state government to 11 times more Zacatecan bean producers, with that we are helping them. And the question is: Where is that seed going to come from? It’s going to leave here (…) These facilities were formerly the National Seed Producer, Pronase. It was one of the things that the neoliberal governments said were no longer needed and they destroyed Pronase, they liquidated it (…).

“We are going to rescue, but now it is going to be called the Welfare Seed Producer, Prosebien,” he explained.

For her part, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo assured that the rural programs for small and medium producers will continue: “The big ones don’t need the support.”

“In addition, they will now receive this comprehensive support called Harvesting Sovereignty, which means better seeds (…)”, he said, highlighting programs such as fertilizers, Welfare Seed Producer and loans with low interest and coverage.

Sheinbaum commented that bean producers will be paid 27 pesos per kilo as established in the guarantee prices: “And it will be paid on time, not more than a few months to be able to deliver. We want part of those beans to be sold in the new Wellness Stores,” he said.
