Hurricane “Rafael”, category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, changed direction and is moving west in the Golf of Mexico; reported the National Weather Service (SMN), official climate source of the Government of Mexico.
The SMN pointed out that The center of Hurricane “Rafael” remains north of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its circulation will cause occasional heavy rains in the Yucatan Peninsulain addition to generating strong winds and high waves on the coasts of Yucatán.
The cyclone is located 320 km north of Río Lagartos, Yucatán, and 380 km north-northeast of Progreso, Yucatán (By interpolation).
It maintains maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h and gusts of 240 km/h.
Heavy rains (25 to 50mm) are expected in Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. In addition, wind with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h and waves of 1.5 to 2.5 meters high are expected on the coast of Yucatan.
They ask the general population to take extreme precautions in the areas of the mentioned states due to rain, wind and waves. (including maritime navigation) and address the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System, in each entity.
