“We have seen images of desolation, where we say to ourselves that it is the end of the world,” says Yann Badra, founding president of the Protection, Prevention, Rescue and Security Intervention Group (GIPS), located in Villeurbanne, near Lyon. . This volunteer firefighter returns from a four-day mission in Picanya, in the south-east of Spain, where he left with three other people to help the population after last week’s deadly floods.
Still impressed by the extent of the damage, “marked by the number of people dead and still missing”, he tells 20 Minutes how his group “worked day and night to provide as much help as possible on site” but also why it was “a duty” to go there.
