Donald Trump won the presidency of the United States for the second time, obtaining the 277 electoral votes he needs, above the 224 that the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has so far.
The candidate for the White House needed 270 of the 538 votes of the Electoral College to obtain victory, a figure surpassed. With this, the former US president (2017-2021) will occupy the White House for the second time starting January 20, 2025.
Due to his rhetoric and constant attacks against Mexico in his speeches, there is the latent question of how much the arrival of the American magnate to the presidency will affect our country. But which of your proposals could have negative repercussions in Mexico?
These are some of the threats that the virtual president of the United States launched during his election campaign:
Immigration
His 2016 campaign’s “Build the Wall!” has become about creating “the largest mass deportation program in history.” Trump has proposed using the National Guard and empowering domestic police forces in the effort. However, Trump has been scant on details of what the program would look like and how he would ensure it only targets people in the United States illegally.
He has proposed “ideological screening” for potential entrants, ending birthright citizenship (which would almost certainly require a constitutional change) and said he would reinstate policies from his first term such as “Stay in Mexico”limiting migrants for public health reasons and severely limiting or banning the entry of people from certain Muslim-majority nations. Taken together, the approach would not only crack down on illegal migration, but limit immigration overall.
Duty
The Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened this Monday, one day before the election, to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico if the country does not “stop the passage of criminals and drugs.” During a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, Trump said that during his administration (2017-2021), forced Mexico to deploy soldiers to stop the flow of migrants. “Mexico paid for the soldiers. They paid us so much”… he assured.
In addition, he said he had a great relationship with former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “He was a socialist… You can’t have everything,” and he complained about the “invasion” of migrants from Mexico.
Immediately afterwards, he said that, if he wins the presidency in the elections tomorrow, November 5, the first thing he will do is communicate with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. “They say she’s very nice, I don’t know her,” he mentioned.
However, he announced that the call will be to warn him that “if they do not stop the arrival of criminals and drugs to the southern border of the United States, “I will impose 25% tariffs on everything they send. If it does not work, 50%. If does not work, 75%, and if it does not work, 100%.”
